The full form of dB is Decibel. A decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit used to express the ratio between two values of a physical quantity, such as power or field strength, relative to a defined or assumed reference level.
Although commonly associated with sound, the decibel is a versatile unit used in various fields like audio engineering, electronics, and telecommunications. It’s represented by the symbol ‘dB’.
In simple terms, a decibel is used to compare one value of power or signal strength to another — but on a logarithmic scale rather than a linear one. This makes it much easier to represent very large or very small ratios in compact numbers.
When measuring power, this ratio is called the power level.
When measuring voltage, current, or pressure, it’s known as the field level.
The decibel scale (or dB scale) is a logarithmic scale designed to represent sound levels in a way that matches how the human ear perceives sound. Our hearing can adapt to an extremely wide range of sound intensities, and a linear scale just wouldn’t do it justice.
That’s why we use a logarithmic approach — it compresses vast differences in intensity into a more manageable numeric range.
Here’s how it works:
The quietest sound the average human ear can detect is assigned 0 dB.
A sound 10 times more powerful than this is 10 dB.
A sound 100 times more intense is 20 dB.
A sound that's 1,000 times more powerful than near silence is 30 dB.
This exponential growth makes it easy to compare sound levels across environments — from a pin drop to a jet engine.
