If you are an Indian student planning a Master's in Germany, the newest question on every forum is simple: do I actually need the dMAT? Understanding dmat exam eligibility is now the first step in your APS journey, because getting it wrong can delay your admission by a full intake. The Digital Master Test (dMAT) does not apply to everyone — it targets specific fields, specific degree levels, and specific intakes. This 2026 guide breaks down exactly which fields and degrees require it, who is exempt, and how to confirm your status in minutes.
The dMAT is required only for Indian Master's applicants whose previous degree falls in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, and who are applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later. Bachelor's applicants, PhD applicants, and other fields are exempt. It is a mandatory part of APS documentation, not an entrance exam.
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a standardised academic aptitude test introduced by APS India and g.a.s.t. on 29 June 2026 as an additional element inside the existing APS verification process. It does not replace APS document verification — it sits alongside it.
Eligibility matters because the dMAT certificate becomes part of your APS file. If your degree and intake make you eligible, APS India can only issue your certificate after your dMAT result has been submitted and checked. Miss the requirement, and your Germany application stalls. Understand it early, and you simply slot it into your timeline like any other document.
For the wider picture of the credential-verification step, see our detailed APS certificate guide for Germany.
According to APS India, three conditions must all be true for the dMAT to apply to you:
There is also a fourth, time-sensitive condition around your APS start date — covered in the exemptions section. If even one condition is not met, the dMAT does not apply to you in this first phase.
APS India has published three official field groups. If your Bachelor's degree sits inside any of them, you are in scope.
| Affected Field Group | Typical Indian Degrees Covered | dMAT Required? |
| Engineering | B.Tech / B.E. (all branches), incl. CSE & IT awarded as engineering | Yes |
| Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics | B.Com, BBA (Finance), B.A. Economics, accounting degrees | Yes |
| Business / Management | BBA, BMS, integrated management degrees | Yes |
| Sciences (pure) — e.g. B.Sc Physics, Chemistry | Not in the affected list | No |
| Humanities, Arts, Law, Medicine, Design | Not in the affected list | No |

One rule overrides everything else: the title on your certificate decides, not the everyday name of your course. APS India classifies applicants based on the exact official degree title, branch, major, or specialisation printed on your marksheets and transcripts. Words like "Technology," "Management," or "Engineering" in a course name do not automatically settle the matter.
For most engineering graduates, the answer is straightforward. A B.Tech or B.E. in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical, or any core branch is squarely inside the affected list, so the dmat exam for engineering applicants is mandatory when you target Summer 2027 or later.
The grey zone is computer degrees. Here is how it works:
So a "computer" background alone doesn't decide it — the classification of your degree does. If your title is ambiguous (for example Data Science, FinTech, or Engineering Management), check the official affected-fields list before you assume either way.
|
Commerce and business graduates are the second large group affected. B.Com, BBA, BMS, B.A. Economics, and accounting or finance degrees all fall inside the affected list. If you are a dMAT for commerce students case applying for a Master's in Management, Finance, Business Analytics, or Economics from Summer 2027, plan to sit the exam.
Interdisciplinary degrees such as Business Analytics or Engineering Management can straddle two groups. For dual or integrated-degree holders, the practical guide our counsellors use is to look at the German Master's programme you are applying to and the official title of your qualifying degree together, then verify against the APS list.
If Germany's affordable, high-quality Master's programmes are your goal, our MS in Germany for Indian students page walks through course options and costs.
You do not need the dMAT if any of the following applies. Use this as a checklist:
These transitional exemptions are important: the cutoff is your APS submission date, not your degree or certificate date. If you registered or shipped before 29 June 2026, you are covered under the old rules even if verification is still ongoing.
| Pacific Educational Consultant Insight The 29 June 2026 cutoff creates a real planning opportunity for the future. If you already have your APS certificate from an earlier cycle, you are exempt for that completed procedure — but the moment you open a new APS application later, the rules in force at that time apply. Never assume a past exemption carries over automatically to a fresh file. |
Instead of re-reading dense circulars, run your profile through this simple framework our counsellors built. You need the dMAT only if you answer "Yes" to all four.
| # | Question | Your Answer |
| 1 | Are you applying for a Master's (not Bachelor's / PhD)? | Yes / No |
| 2 | Is your intake Summer 2027 or later? | Yes / No |
| 3 | Is your degree in Engineering, Commerce/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management? | Yes / No |
| 4 | Did you start APS on or after 29 June 2026 (and not via exchange/double-degree)? | Yes / No |
Four Yeses = dMAT required. Any single No = exempt (for this phase). Print this, fill it in, and you have your answer in under a minute.
The first dMAT cycle in India follows a fixed schedule. The exam fee is €150, charged by g.a.s.t. during registration — separate from the APS fee (reported at around €225 by Fintiba). In rupees, €150 works out to roughly ₹15,000–₹16,500 depending on the exchange rate on the day.
| Milestone | Date (First Cycle) |
| Registration opens | 29 June 2026 |
| Registration deadline | 15 September 2026 |
| dMAT exam date | 26 September 2026 |
| Certificate available online | 12 October 2026 |
| Exam fee | €150 (paid to g.a.s.t.) |
The test is offered at licensed centres across India, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. Seats are booked first-come, first-served, so registering early protects your preferred city. If your target centre fills up, you may have to choose another location.

You do not need a chapter-wise syllabus — the dMAT tests reasoning, not memorised theory. In brief:
For a full breakdown of question types and preparation strategy, read our complete study in Germany for Indian students resource hub rather than cramming here.
| Pacific Educational Consultant Insight Because there is no pass/fail line and universities set their own weighting, do not wait for a "perfect" score. Our data-based recommendation: submit your APS documents early (you are allowed to file before your dMAT certificate arrives), sit the exam once, and let the result attach later. Waiting for benchmark scores that don't exist yet only risks missing your intake. |
Is the dMAT mandatory for all Indian students applying to Germany?
No. It is mandatory only for Master's applicants in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management applying for Summer Semester 2027 or later. Everyone else is unaffected in this phase.
Do I need the dMAT for a Master's in engineering?
Yes, if you hold a B.Tech or B.E. and apply for Summer 2027 onward with an APS started on or after 29 June 2026. CSE and IT count when awarded as engineering degrees.
Is a B.Sc Computer Science or BCA degree covered by the dMAT?Not automatically. Standalone B.Sc Computer Science, BCA, Data Science, AI, and Cybersecurity degrees are not covered unless APS India classifies your specific degree title as engineering.
Do Bachelor's or PhD applicants have to take the dMAT?
No. The dMAT applies only to selected Master's applicants. Bachelor's and PhD applicants are exempt under the current rules.
How much does the dMAT cost?
The dMAT fee is €150, paid to g.a.s.t. during registration. This is separate from the APS fee.
Will a low dMAT score get my APS certificate rejected?
No. The dMAT is not a pass/fail test for APS. A low score does not automatically lead to refusal of your APS certificate; universities decide independently how to weigh it.
When is the first dMAT and when do results come out?
The first exam is on 26 September 2026 (registration closes 15 September 2026), and certificates become available online from 12 October 2026.
Does the dMAT replace the APS certificate?
No. The dMAT is an additional element within APS documentation. APS India still verifies your academic documents through the existing process.
I already have my APS certificate. Do I need the dMAT?
No. If you completed the APS procedure and received your certificate, you are exempt for that procedure. A new APS application later would follow the rules in force at that time.
Where can I take the dMAT in India?
At licensed centres including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. The final list is shown during registration.
Every degree title is different, and the affected-fields list has genuine grey zones. Our Germany specialists at Pacific Educational Consultant can check your exact degree, intake, and APS status in one short session — and map out your full timeline.
