If you're an Indian student planning a Master's in Germany, you've probably seen two terms appear together and cause a lot of confusion: APS India and the new dMAT. Many students assume the APS India dMAT update means one has replaced the other, or that a "test score" now decides whether their APS certificate is approved. Neither is true.
This guide clears it up in plain language: what each one does, how the Digital Master Test fits inside your APS file, whether the dMAT is required for your APS certificate, and exactly who is exempt. Every figure below is drawn from the official APS India and g.a.s.t. (d-mat.de) pages, updated for the 2026 rollout.
The dMAT is required for your APS certificate only if your previous degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management and you're applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later. For everyone else, it is not required. The dMAT is an added document inside APS — it does not replace document verification.
The single biggest source of confusion is thinking dMAT and APS are the same process. They aren't. They're run by two separate organisations and check two completely different things.
| APS India | dMAT (Digital Master Test) | |
| Run by | APS India (Academic Evaluation Center) | g.a.s.t. — Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development |
| What it checks | Authenticity & formal plausibility of your academic documents | Academic aptitude and reasoning ability |
| Type | Document verification | Standardised computer-based test (~3.5 hrs) |
| Result | APS certificate | dMAT certificate (referenced on your APS certificate) |
| Who it applies to | All Indian applicants to Germany | Only selected Master's applicants (see below) |
| Introduced | October 2022 | Announced 29 June 2026; applies from Summer 2027 |
💡 Pacific Educational Consultant Insight #1In our counselling sessions, the first question almost every Germany-bound student asks is: "Does the dMAT replace APS?" The answer is a firm no. Think of your APS application as an envelope. APS India checks that every document inside is genuine. For affected applicants, the dMAT certificate is simply one more sheet that now goes into that same envelope. Both pieces must be present before your APS certificate is issued — but they are judged on completely different criteria. |
APS India (the Academic Evaluation Center) was introduced for Indian applicants in October 2022 to verify the authenticity of academic credentials before students apply to German universities and, subsequently, for a student visa.
APS India does not decide your admission. Under German higher-education rules, admission decisions belong to the universities. APS India's job is narrower but essential: confirming your documents are real and formally plausible. The APS certificate it issues has lifetime validity — you obtain it once and reuse it across multiple German university applications and intake cycles.
If you're planning your whole application, our Study in Germany for Indian students guide walks you through admissions, APS and visa steps end to end.
The dMAT is a standardised academic aptitude test for Master's applicants, developed by German universities in collaboration with g.a.s.t. From 2026, it becomes a new additional element inside the APS documentation process for select Indian graduates.
Key points about the test itself:
New to the test itself? Start with our explainer on what the dMAT exam is, its full form and meaning.
The dMAT applies to a much smaller group than the headlines suggest — we break the eligibility down fully in is the dMAT mandatory for a Master's in Germany. In short, you are required to take it only if all three of the following are true:
💡 Pacific Educational Consultant Insight #2The exact wording on your degree certificate matters more than what you plan to study in Germany. APS India classifies you on the official degree title, branch, major or specialisation shown on your documents — not on the course name at your German university. A title containing "Management" or "Technology" doesn't automatically place you in an affected group, and borderline cases like "Engineering Management", "Financial Technology" or an integrated MBA are decided against the official list. If your degree is interdisciplinary, don't guess — have it checked before you pay any fee. |
You do not need the dMAT if any of these apply:
For the first Indian cycle, the timeline runs on fixed dates. Missing the registration deadline means missing the exam — there's no confirmed second sitting for 2026 yet.
| Milestone | Date / Amount |
| Rules announced by APS India | 29 June 2026 |
| Registration window (first cycle) | 29 June – 15 September 2026 |
| dMAT exam day | 26 September 2026 |
| First dMAT certificates available | 12 October 2026 |
| Requirement applies from | Summer Semester 2027 intake |
| dMAT fee (to g.a.s.t.) | €150 (≈ ₹16,300–16,600, rate-dependent) |
| APS documentation fee (to APS India, separate) | Reported at ≈ ₹18,000 — confirm the current figure on aps-india.de |
Budget note: The dMAT fee and the APS fee are two separate payments to two separate organisations. Affected applicants should budget for both (roughly ₹34,000+ combined), before any university application or visa costs. The €150 dMAT fee is billed in Euros; a retake is a fresh €150 registration.
Because the dMAT is new, most timeline mistakes come from doing steps in the wrong order. Use this four-step sequence:

No. This is one of the most reassuring facts about the APS India dMAT update. APS India has confirmed the dMAT is not a pass/fail exam, and a low score does not automatically cause your APS certificate to be refused. What matters for APS completeness is that the certificate is submitted.
Your dMAT score is displayed on your APS certificate for German universities to consider alongside your transcripts. Each university independently decides how much weight to give it. So while there's no "passing mark" for APS, a strong score can still help you stand out for competitive programmes — see how the marking works in our guide to how the dMAT score and result are calculated.
1. Is the dMAT required for an APS certificate?
Only for selected applicants: Master's candidates in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics or Business/Management, applying for Summer Semester 2027 or later. If that's not you, it isn't required.
2. Does the dMAT replace APS verification?
No. APS India still verifies whether your documents are genuine. The dMAT is an additional document inside your APS file, not a replacement for it.
3. Is the dMAT required for the Winter 2026/27 intake?
No. The requirement starts with the Summer Semester 2027 intake. Winter 2026/27 applicants are unaffected.
4. How much does the dMAT cost, and is it part of the APS fee?
The dMAT is €150 (≈ ₹16,300–16,600), paid directly to g.a.s.t. It is separate from the APS documentation fee, which is paid to APS India.
5. Will a low dMAT score cause my APS certificate to be rejected?
No. The dMAT is not pass/fail. A low score does not automatically block your APS certificate; the score is simply shown on the certificate for universities to consider.
6. I'm applying for a Bachelor's or PhD. Do I need the dMAT?
No. Under current rules the dMAT applies only to selected Master's applicants. Bachelor's and PhD applicants are exempt.
7. My APS was registered before 29 June 2026. Am I exempt?
Yes. If you completed APS online registration or shipped your complete documents before 29 June 2026, you're exempt for that procedure — even if documents arrive later.
8. Can I submit my APS documents before I have my dMAT certificate?
For Summer 2027 applicants, yes — APS India allows the dMAT certificate to follow later while verification begins. But every other document must be complete in your first submission.
9. Is the dMAT the same as TestAS or a language test?
No. TestAS is a separate aptitude test, and the dMAT is not a language exam. It doesn't replace TestDaF, IELTS or any language requirement.
10. My degree title is borderline (e.g. "Engineering Management"). How do I know if I'm affected?
Check your official degree title against the APS India Affected Fields list, or get written confirmation from APS India before registering. Don't rely on the field name alone.
