The full form of KFC is Kentucky Fried Chicken. It is one of the world’s most recognized American fast-food restaurant chains, famous for its signature fried chicken. Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, KFC operates in over 150 countries, including India, and stands as the second-largest restaurant chain globally, right after McDonald’s.
KFC was founded during the Great Depression by Colonel Harland Sanders, who started selling fried chicken from a roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, in the 1930s. Recognizing the potential of franchising, Sanders opened the first official KFC franchise in Utah in 1952 (not 1992 as sometimes misstated).
KFC quickly rose to prominence, becoming the first American fast-food brand to expand internationally. By the 1960s, it had established outlets in countries like Jamaica, Canada, the UK, and Mexico.
Colonel Sanders became a cultural icon, appearing in advertisements and representing the brand’s identity. However, overwhelmed by the business’s rapid expansion, he sold the company in 1964 to a group led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey. After several ownership transitions, PepsiCo acquired KFC in 1987, and later, in 1997, it became part of Yum! Brands.
KFC’s global footprint grew significantly, particularly in China, where it opened its first outlet in 1987, becoming the first major Western fast-food chain to enter the market. Today, China remains KFC’s largest single market.
The brand’s signature offering—pressure-fried chicken—is prepared using Colonel Sanders' secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, a recipe that has remained iconic for decades. Introduced in 1957 by franchisee Pete Harman, the famous KFC chicken bucket became an instant hit and remains a customer favorite.
Over the years, KFC has expanded its menu to include:
Chicken sandwiches and wraps
French fries, salads, and coleslaw
Desserts and beverages
Sourcing chicken inspected and approved by the USDA
Ensuring chicken is free from added hormones and steroids
Maintaining a 90% dye-free menu for all in-house chicken items (excluding third-party products)
KFC is famous for its catchy and memorable slogans:
“It’s Finger-Lickin’ Good!”
“Nobody Does Chicken Like KFC”
“So Good”
With more than 24,105 restaurants in 125 countries and territories, KFC continues to be a dominant force in the global fast-food industry. Its combination of unique flavor, quality control, and brand legacy has made it a household name across generations.
