What is the Full Form of CPT? CPT

stands for Common Proficiency Test. It is an entry-level examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for students aspiring to become Chartered Accountants (CAs). This test assesses a candidate’s knowledge in subjects like Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics, and Quantitative Aptitude.

Before 2017, CPT was a mandatory test for enrolling in the CA program. However, ICAI later replaced it with the CA Foundation course under the revised education scheme. Despite this change, many still refer to CA Foundation as CPT informally.

Now, let’s dive into the eligibility criteria for CPT.

Eligibility Requirements for CPT

Students who have successfully completed their 10th standard are eligible to enroll in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). However, to appear for the CPT exam, a candidate must have completed at least their 12th standard or an equivalent qualification from a recognized educational board.

To register for the CPT exam, The exam form fee for the CA Foundation exam in 2025 is ₹1,500 for Indian centers. The late exam fee is ₹600.

Information About the CPT Examination

The CPT exam was typically conducted twice a year, in June and December. However, commerce graduates, as well as other degree holders and postgraduates, were exempted from appearing for CPT. Candidates who met the minimum required percentage could directly enroll in IPCC (Integrated Professional Competence Course), which is the second level of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) program.

CA CPT Course Subjects

The CPT syllabus covered four primary subjects, which included:

  1. General Economics
  2. Fundamentals of Accountancy
  3. Mercantile Law
  4. Quantitative Aptitude

These subjects formed the foundation for higher-level CA studies, preparing students for the next stages in their accounting careers.

Conclusion

While CPT is no longer conducted, its legacy continues under the CA Foundation course. This exam is the first step for students aspiring to pursue a career in Chartered Accountancy. With a structured study plan and dedication, candidates can clear the CA Foundation and move forward in their CA journey.
