The UK government has introduced major updates to both the Student Visa (Tier 4) and Graduate Route (Post-Study Work or PGWP).
These changes will come into effect in two phases — the first from 11 November 2025 for Student Visa applicants and the second from 1 January 2027 for Graduate Route applicants.
If you are planning to study or work in the UK after graduation, these updates are essential to understand before applying.
We want to highlight an important change in this statement for students applying for immigration permission under the ‘Student’ route on or after 11 November 2025.
Starting from 11 November 2025, the amount of money international students must show as proof of funds will increase as follows:
✅ £1,529 per month in London (for a maximum of 9 months)
✅ £1,171 per month outside London (for a maximum of 9 months)
✅ Accommodation offset limit: £1,529
The maximum amount of money that can be offset for accommodation will also be increased in line with the new maintenance requirement.
These revised figures ensure that students entering the UK have sufficient financial support during their studies.
For a detailed explanation of financial requirements under the ‘Student’ route, refer to the UKCISA official guidance.
The adjustment in maintenance levels reflects the rising cost of living in the UK. The new rates aim to help students manage their accommodation, transport, and living expenses realistically.
Applicants planning to study in 2026 or beyond must update their financial documentation accordingly before applying for the visa.
Beginning 1 January 2027, the UK will introduce new post-study work (PGWP) rules for graduates who wish to stay and work after completing their studies.
✅ Duration Reduced:
Graduates who have successfully completed an eligible UK bachelor’s or master’s degree will receive 18 months of stay instead of the current 2 years, if they apply on or after 1 January 2027.
✅ PhD Graduates Remain Unaffected:
Those completing a PhD or other doctoral qualification will continue to receive 3 years of post-study work permission.
✅ Applications Before January 2027:
Students applying for the Graduate Route before 1 January 2027 will still receive the current 2-year post-study visa with no change.
This adjustment was first forecast in the Immigration White Paper (May 2025), signaling the UK’s plan to streamline the post-study work pathway while maintaining strong opportunities for high-skilled graduates.
The Graduate Route, also known as the Post-Study Work Visa (PGWP), allows international students to live, work, or look for work in the UK after completing their degree.
It provides an excellent opportunity to gain international work experience and transition to other long-term visas like the Skilled Worker Visa.
All new Student Visa applicants from 11 November 2025 onward.
Graduate Route (PGWP) applicants applying on or after 1 January 2027.
PhD and doctoral graduates remain unaffected by the changes.
Students who apply before these effective dates will continue to receive benefits under the current immigration rules.
