Describe an unusual place you have heard of and would like to visit IELTS cue card

1. Where is it?

The place I’m fascinated by is the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, located on the North Island of New Zealand. It's nestled in a rural area near a small town called Waitomo, about a few hours’ drive from Auckland. Despite its remote location, it attracts tourists from all over the world due to its surreal and magical ambiance.

2. What it looks like?

Inside, the cave looks absolutely otherworldly. The ceiling is dotted with thousands of tiny glowworms that emit a soft blue-green light, creating the illusion of a starlit sky underground. Visitors drift through the cave silently on small boats, with the glowing lights reflecting in the still, dark water. The walls are formed from ancient limestone, adding to its mystique.

3. Why do you think it is unusual and interesting?

What makes it so unusual and interesting is that glowworms are rarely found in such dense populations, and certainly not in such a visually spectacular setting. It’s not every day you come across a natural light show that occurs in complete silence and darkness. It feels like stepping into a fairytale or a sci-fi movie, something completely detached from everyday reality.

4. And explain why you would like to visit it

I would love to visit the Waitomo Glowworm Caves because it offers a rare chance to connect with nature in a deeply peaceful and visually striking way. I’m always drawn to experiences that are both calming and awe-inspiring, and this place checks both boxes. Plus, it’s a great way to learn more about bioluminescence and New Zealand’s unique ecosystem.
