Describe a time you enjoyed a free day off work or school – IELTS Cue Card

You should say:

  • Where you were
  • What you did
  • Who you were with
  • And how you felt about it

Where you were

I remember one Sunday last month when I had a full day off from work. I decided to spend the day at home in Kota because I hadn’t relaxed for weeks due to my busy schedule. The weather was pleasant, and I wanted to make the most of the peaceful morning without any deadlines or responsibilities.

What you did

I began the day by waking up late and having my favorite breakfast, poha and tea. Later, I watched a movie I had been planning to see for a long time. In the afternoon, I read a motivational book and took a short nap. By evening, I went out with my friends for a walk near the lake and enjoyed some street food. It was a perfect mix of relaxation and fun.

Who you were with

Most of the day I spent by myself, which gave me time to reflect and recharge. However, in the evening, I met my two close friends, Rohan and Mehul. We talked about old memories from college, shared a lot of laughter, and enjoyed the sunset together. It felt great to reconnect after so long.

And how you felt about it

That day made me realize how important it is to take a break and spend time on yourself. I felt completely refreshed and peaceful. It helped me reduce stress and boosted my mood. When I returned to work the next day, I was more productive and energetic. It was truly one of the most relaxing and memorable days I’ve had recently.

Follow Up Questions

1. Why is working extra hours common nowadays?

Working extra hours has become common because of increased competition, work pressure, and the need to meet deadlines. Many companies also expect employees to be more productive, and people often work longer to secure promotions or maintain job stability.

2. What can we do to stop working long hours?

To reduce long working hours, both employers and employees should set clear boundaries. Companies can promote flexible schedules or remote work options, while individuals can improve time management and prioritize important tasks to finish on time.

3. Do people nowadays have more free time than in the past?

I don’t think so. Even though technology has made life easier, people spend a lot of time online or multitasking. In the past, people had simpler lifestyles, while today, the line between work and personal life has become blurred.

4. What do people like to do when they are free in your country?

In my country, people enjoy spending their free time with family and friends. Many go out for dinner, watch movies, play cricket, or travel to nearby places. Some prefer relaxing at home or watching TV shows and using social media.

5. Do you think most people are able to manage their free time well?

Not really. Many people waste their free time scrolling through their phones or watching unnecessary content. Only a few use their time wisely by learning new skills, exercising, or doing something productive and relaxing.

6. What’s the difference between the things people did in their free time in the past and the things they do nowadays?

In the past, people spent their free time outdoors—playing sports, visiting relatives, or reading books. Nowadays, most people prefer digital entertainment such as watching movies, playing games, or using social media, which makes life more convenient but less active.
