Describe a Time When You Encouraged Someone to Do Something They Didn’t Want to Do – IELTS Cue Card

Encouragement plays a powerful role in shaping people’s confidence and decisions. In daily life, we often come across situations where someone feels scared, doubtful, or unwilling to take an important step. In such moments, a few motivating words can completely change their mindset.

In the IELTS Speaking test, this topic frequently appears because it allows candidates to demonstrate emotional intelligence, communication skills, and real-life experience.

In this blog, you will find a complete Band 7+ sample answer along with well-structured follow-up responses.

You should say:

  • Who he or she is

  • What you encouraged him/her to do

  • How he/she reacted

  • And explain why you encouraged him/her

Sample Answer (Band 7+)

I would like to talk about a time when I encouraged my younger cousin, Rohan, to participate in a school debate competition, even though he was extremely nervous and unwilling to take part.

Rohan is an intelligent student, but he lacks confidence when it comes to speaking in public. His teacher had selected him for the inter-school debate competition, but he wanted to withdraw because he was afraid of making mistakes and being judged by others.

I encouraged him to face his fear and view the competition as a learning opportunity rather than a pressure-filled event. I shared my own experiences of stage fear and explained how stepping out of my comfort zone had helped me grow. I also helped him prepare his speech and practise daily.

At first, he was hesitant and anxious, but gradually he became more confident. Eventually, he participated in the competition and even won second prize. He later thanked me for motivating him and said that the experience boosted his self-confidence.

I encouraged him because I strongly believe that fear should never stop someone from achieving their potential. Sometimes, people just need a little push and belief from others to succeed.
