In the IELTS Speaking test, candidates are often asked to describe a person who showed intelligence or creativity in solving a difficult problem. This cue card helps test your ability to narrate an experience clearly, use past tense, and explain reasons logically. In this answer, I will describe a person who solved a problem in a smart and practical way.
You should say:
Who this person is
What the problem was
How he/she solved it
And explain why you think he/she did it in a smart way
The person I would like to talk about is my elder cousin, Rahul, who works as an electrical engineer in a manufacturing company.
The problem occurred during a family wedding ceremony when the entire venue suddenly lost electricity just one hour before the main event. The hall was full of guests, and panic started spreading because all the lights, fans, and sound systems stopped working at once.
Instead of getting nervous, Rahul remained calm and quickly assessed the situation. He discovered that the main power supply had failed due to an overloaded generator. He immediately arranged an alternative power source by connecting smaller backup generators available nearby and redistributed the electrical load wisely. Within fifteen minutes, electricity was restored, and the function continued smoothly.
I think he solved the problem in a smart way because he did not waste time blaming anyone or creating chaos. He used his technical knowledge, presence of mind, and practical thinking to handle a stressful situation effectively. His solution was fast, economical, and safe, which impressed everyone at the ceremony.
This incident taught me that being smart is not only about intelligence but also about staying calm and finding practical solutions when problems arise.
I believe children are born with natural abilities, but smartness mainly develops through learning and experience. Education, family environment, and exposure to challenges help children sharpen their thinking skills. Intelligence grows when children are encouraged to ask questions and solve problems on their own.
Children become smart at school by participating in activities such as group discussions, problem-solving tasks, projects, and competitions. Teachers play an important role by motivating students to think creatively instead of memorizing facts. Practical learning and teamwork also help them develop critical thinking skills.
Some people are well-rounded because they explore different interests like sports, arts, and academics. They develop multiple skills over time. On the other hand, some people focus deeply on one field due to personal interest or career goals, which makes them specialists in that area. Both types of people are valuable to society.
Modern society needs different kinds of talent because no single skill can solve all problems. Engineers build technology, doctors save lives, teachers educate future generations, and artists inspire creativity. A balanced society depends on people with diverse abilities working together to achieve progress.
