Describe a person who helps to protect the environment - IELTS Cue Card

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • When this person does this
  • What has the person done
  • And explain why you think this is important

Who this person is

The person I would like to talk about is Mr. Rakesh Sharma, my school’s science teacher. He is extremely passionate about environmental conservation and has been actively promoting eco-friendly habits among students and the local community for many years.

When this person does this

He started this work almost five years ago, when he noticed how much plastic waste was being generated in and around our school. Since then, he has been conducting regular cleanliness drives every Saturday morning and leading various awareness campaigns throughout the year — especially on World Environment Day and Earth Day.

What has the person done

Mr. Sharma initiated several impactful projects such as a plastic-free campus campaign, tree plantation drives, and a rainwater harvesting system within our school. He also encourages students to bring reusable bottles and lunch boxes instead of plastic ones. Recently, he launched a community recycling program where waste paper and bottles are collected and sent for recycling.

And explain why you think this is important

I think his contribution is incredibly important because small, consistent efforts like his create long-term awareness and behavioral change in society. By motivating students to take responsibility for their surroundings, he is shaping a generation that values sustainability. People like him inspire others to take action, and without such initiatives, protecting our environment for future generations would be very difficult.

Follow Up Questions

1. Why can recycling help the environment?

Recycling helps reduce waste, saves natural resources, and lowers pollution levels. By reusing materials like paper, plastic, and metal, we decrease the need for new raw materials and reduce landfill waste.

2. What have people done to damage the environment?

People have caused harm through deforestation, overuse of plastic, burning fossil fuels, and industrial pollution. These activities lead to climate change, air and water pollution, and loss of wildlife habitats.

3. Do you think technology can improve environment-related problems?

Yes, definitely. Modern technology can help through renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, electric vehicles, and waste management innovations. Smart systems also monitor pollution and promote sustainable urban planning.

4. Is it important to teach students environmental protection at school?

Absolutely. Schools play a key role in shaping young minds. When students learn about environmental protection early, they develop eco-friendly habits and grow into responsible citizens who care about sustainability.
