This IELTS Speaking article provides guidance on the cue card topic "Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do something." The session is divided into three parts: an introduction, cue card assessment, and a follow-up question-and-answer round. It typically lasts 12–15 minutes, allowing you to showcase your perspective and speaking abilities. To support your preparation, we have included four sample answers for this IELTS Speaking topic.
In the second part of the IELTS Speaking test, the examiner will provide you with a random topic related to daily life. You will have 1 minute to prepare and are expected to speak for 1.5 to 2 minutes. To achieve fluency and coherence within this time frame, consistent practice with IELTS cue cards is essential. After completing Part 2, the examiner will ask follow-up questions based on your cue card response, which you should answer in 5–7 sentences.
You should say:
Who he or she is?
What you encouraged him/her to do?
How he/she reacted?
And explain why you encouraged him/her?
Below are two sample answers for the topic "Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do something," along with relevant follow-up questions for Part 3 practice.
Throughout life, we often find opportunities to inspire and encourage others. Recently, I had such an experience when I traveled to Rishikesh with one of my closest friends during the summer holidays. After enduring months of lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic, we all needed a refreshing break. Rishikesh, known for its adventurous sports like rafting, paragliding, and cliff jumping, offered the perfect escape.
My friend Dev accompanied me on this trip. Dev has always had a fear of heights and water, which made him reluctant to participate in any adventure activities.
I encouraged him to step out of his comfort zone and try rafting and paragliding. I knew he would regret missing out on such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Initially, Dev was firm in his refusal. He suggested I join the others while he stayed behind. I patiently explained the safety measures and even showed him YouTube videos of people safely enjoying the activities. Eventually, speaking to a few tourists at the site, who shared their positive experiences, helped calm his nerves. With a little more encouragement from my side, he finally agreed.
I encouraged Dev because I knew overcoming this fear would boost his confidence immensely. After completing the activities, he was thrilled and proud of himself. It was truly rewarding to see him so happy and grateful for the push.
This experience reinforced my belief that sometimes, a little encouragement can help people conquer their fears and create lifelong memories.
Encouraging someone to step outside their comfort zone is not always easy, especially when they are hesitant or fearful. However, it can lead to truly rewarding outcomes. I have been encouraged by many people in my life, and I too have motivated others when needed.
Today, I would like to share a time when I encouraged my friend Lakshya to participate in a singing competition during our school days.
Lakshya was a very talented singer but suffered from glossophobia — the fear of public speaking or performing. Despite his incredible voice, he refused to register for the singing competition at our academy.
Initially, Lakshya flatly refused and was extremely nervous at the idea of performing in front of a crowd. I reassured him that he had immense talent and would be appreciated by the audience. I reminded him that nothing bad would happen, even if he made a small mistake. After persistent motivation and emotional support, he finally agreed to participate.
I encouraged him because I believed that his fear was holding him back from showcasing his true talent. With a little push, he could achieve something remarkable. And I was right — Lakshya performed brilliantly and even won the first prize! His confidence skyrocketed, and to this day, he thanks me for encouraging him.
This incident taught me that believing in someone’s potential and offering genuine support can make a significant difference in their lives.
