Describe a City You Enjoyed Visiting – IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • When you visited it
  • How long you stayed there
  • What you did there
  • And explain why you enjoyed visiting it

1. Where is the city?

The city I enjoyed visiting is Chandigarh. It is located in northern India and serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. It is famous for its cleanliness, greenery, wide roads, and planned infrastructure.

2. When did you visit it?

I visited Chandigarh after completing my 12th-grade exams. It was a relaxing vacation because I had studied very hard for my exams and wanted to take a short break with my best friend.

3. How long did you stay there?

I stayed there for a weekend. Although it was a short trip, I enjoyed it a lot because we visited many popular places and spent quality time together.

4. What did you do there?

During my stay, I visited the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, and Elante Mall. I explored the city, clicked pictures, enjoyed delicious food, did some shopping, and spent time relaxing with my friend.

5. Why did you enjoy visiting it?

I enjoyed visiting Chandigarh because it is a clean, green, peaceful, and well-planned city. I also liked the disciplined behaviour of the people and the variety of places to explore. The city gave me a refreshing and positive experience.

Before You Travel to a City, What Factors Would You Consider?

Before travelling to a new city, I would consider a few important factors. First, I would check the weather so that I can pack suitable clothes. Second, I would look at the cost of hotels, food, and transportation to make sure the trip fits my budget. Finally, I would search for famous tourist attractions and prepare a simple itinerary so that I can use my time properly.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Follow-up Questions

1. What are the disadvantages of living in a very famous city?

Living in a very famous city has several disadvantages. The biggest problem is the high cost of living. Rent, food, transport, and daily expenses are usually much more expensive in popular cities. Another major issue is overcrowding because famous cities attract tourists, students, and working professionals from different places. This often leads to traffic jams, noise pollution, and air pollution. So, although famous cities offer many opportunities, life there can be stressful and expensive.

2. Do you prefer to visit well-developed cities or cities with a long history?

I personally prefer visiting cities with a long history because they feel more interesting and unique to me. Historical cities have old buildings, forts, palaces, museums, and monuments that tell us a lot about the past. I enjoy learning how people lived in earlier times. On the other hand, well-developed cities are also attractive because they have modern malls, clean roads, and advanced facilities. However, many modern cities look quite similar, while historical cities have their own charm and identity.

3. For those who live in cities, is it because they want to or have to?

I think people live in cities for both reasons. Many people have to live in cities because better job opportunities, universities, hospitals, and business facilities are usually available there. For such people, city life is more of a necessity. However, some people live in cities because they genuinely enjoy the fast-paced lifestyle, entertainment options, shopping malls, restaurants, and better connectivity. So, for some people, it is a choice, while for others, it is a requirement.
